The Definition Of Biodiversity

         Biodiversity, to me, is the amount of diversity of life found in an ecosystem. Links to an external site. )            Biodiversity is essential for stability. Every species has it's place on Earth, even the smallest. Bees pollinate flowers, which in turn provide fruits and vegetables for other animals and humans. Even before this step, bees and other insects act as a food source for other animals, and can be for humans as well. Birds act as prey and predator, keeping everything in balance. My Study Area

            The area I am picking for my study is Lake Mendocino, located in Ukiah, Ca. I have been working at this lake for a year as a Park Ranger for the U.S Army Corps of Engineers. I have learned a lot about the area and its history, and I am eager to learn more. Since coming here, I have partnered with the California Native Plant Society in regards to the vegetation. One of my current projects is restoring a native garden. I have also done work with the Fish and Wildlife team for the SteelHead Trout. I have also recently completed a training for the top ten most invasive species that threaten the lake.             What I hope to gain from this study is better understanding of the environmental history of the area. Web Soil

  The web soil survey was a completely new experience for me. In a way, it reminded me a lot of GIS. Before this, I was never aware that my county, speaking from a soil survey standpoint, was split up into three categories. As I played around more with the results, it made sense. Some parts of my area are coastal, others has more acidity, and then my area has a good mix of everything. When it comes to restoring native vegetation, it makes me wonder if an outside source brought in different soils to try in the gardens previously. It would explain why my luck with the gardens isn't going to well.
